It'll definitely get Oppo turned up but I won't disagree, that WRX is ugly.
UGLY.
This is coming from the guy who owns a Veloster, which isn't the most handsome thing on the market either. That WRX is just sad.
Sadness everywhere.
Mercedes was CLEARLY onto something with the CLA45. For those kinds of prices, oh fuck it I'd rather spend a bit more and just get the Merc. Good grief, what an ugly car.
They gave the WRX/STI their own 'platforms' and this is all they could do?
How do you go from the concept with was exceptionally aggressive and forward thinking to this?
Why.
Just why.
Help me understand.

Actually, looking at the two its 100% dead on given the things that HAVE to happen to go from production to reality. Aside from stuff like lights, wheels and flashy show stuff...its more or less 100%. The greenhouse is taller, but its a car...thats what they look like if you want to see out of them. I am totally fine with ugly if it means better visibility.

It's less ugly and more boring. The concept screwed them once they decided to not have the real version look like it. Subaru can do function, we knew that. Apparently they can do form too, but only at auto shows.

I haven't really being paying attention closely to the new Impreza. So when I saw this pic, I assumed somebody photoshopped a Subaru front end onto a Civic and we were to discuss our thoughts on that. I came to the comments only to realize that this is actually a real thing.

That's concept cars for you: Rule #1, unless if looks like a car on a lot right now, its not going to look like it does in concept form when it does. A concept is a caricature of a new design. What you think supermodels actually look like they do in magazines?

JayhawkeJake mentioned it already, but I have to re-iterate, since it pisses me off so much that I don't have much faith left in Subaru... after being a Subaru enthusiast for years.
The WRX Concept was gorgeous. It showed that Subaru KNOWS the difference.
The production car, since the initial shots of it testing in camo-wrap, is dowdy and boring.
IT WAS A KNOWN AND INTENTIONAL BAIT AND SWITCH.
I hate being treated that way. I am a two-time Subaru owner, and enthusiast, in a climate that I really benefit from having an AWD performance car, and I am a working professional.
I should be the demographic that should be buying WRX or WRX STI.
I won't. Not after that cruel trick. They KNEW what they were doing with the concept, and they KNEW what the production model would look like.
They made a big deal about delaying the WRX/STI for three years after the new Impreza came out, and made sure that anyone watching Subaru knew that WRX and WRX STI no longer will wear any Impreza naming.
And they make it the same old boring-looking Impreza body with a wing, and a turbo underneath.
This was their chance to make an improvement, and other than direct injection, they haven't.
I was done with Ford because the Mustang stagnated, and the Probe and Mercury Cougar went nowhere... and they started cutting manual gearboxes out of most cars with any option content, as if a manual gearbox is only for economy cars.
I went to Subaru instead... now Subaru is putting CVTs in boring-looking Impreza Turbos... merely called WRX. The differences and naming is marketing theory at this point.
On to the next brand... I am not sure which one that will be... but at this point, I would rather own an old high-mileage Porsche than a low-mile late-model Subaru.

Function over form is one thing...
but phoning in the production econo-box-derived form as if it doesn't matter, after showing a concept that shows they know what good form IS, and that it CAN FIT over the function, is an insult.

Yeah but it's not impossible to make a car look close to the concept
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/attachm…
I wouldn't mind the concept being so radically different if there was a big gap between the concept and the production model. If the concept was shown 2 years ago as a 'this is a design direction we might go', sweet. But that was shown what, 6 months ago? They would have already known that the car wasn't going to look anything like it, which it doesn't.
We were promised a sleek sports sedan, instead we got a family car with some extra oomph. That's what the WRX/STi has always been, but we were led to believe it'd be different this time. I think in this case it's not so much that the WRX is ugly, it's that it isn't what we were expecting.

Cars that go strait from concept to production are...in my opinion...the worst. Huge compromises for style and they generally do well for one...maybe 2 generations and then die.

As unattractive as this is, I think it would actually look good as a hatch. The front of it isn't terrible IMO, it just doesn't blend well, and the rear is bad.
Someone with photoshop skillz should graft the front of this onto the previous gen WRX hatch.

Now i has a sad.
I always wants to own a 4-wheel drive sedan called Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. But now it's gone.
Then i test drive the Impreza, the one before this one, and it's great. Not as great as the evo, but at least you can buy it.
And now, look what subie give us..

While beating the clay with ugly stick, I think the designers were counting on that lower engine placement a la BRZ. The front side bulge there may have been to accommodate that setup, and a nice 911-style sweep to the rear wheels at the same angle to match.
Then engineering got back to them, higher hood, which then they had to match the less extreme angle, rippling over the whole shape, and the glass boffins wanted a easier to build window.

I find it the other way around. If you can't somehow manage to marry the form you want with the function you need, then you have failed as a car designer, or any sort of designer for things that need to look good and perform.
That's why the 2015 WRX is awful. It actually doesn't match the concept at all. Sure the individual details are there and make for great lip-service to the concept, but core shape and atmosphere of the car have been lost. They are two completely different automobiles.

The entire history of the WRX has been function over form. All of it. These have never been pretty cars. If you don't like the styling, they might not be the cars for you.

I disagree. I think prior WRXs looked great...again...where is the "function" over form? There is no performance statistic that this car generates that requires that shape....
